In some areas, you have the option to switch companies which are supplying your home gas or your electricity. Unfortunately, not everyone has the option of shopping around, and in some areas, their only option would be switching to alternative energy sources. When you are stuck in an area with only one supplier, a company with a corner on the market, you will be stuck paying whatever it is that they want to charge you unless you can afford to switch to alternative energy. Alternative energy is also highly limited in that, you more than likely don't have alternative energy options in an apartment and you would not install alternative options if you are a renter.

If you do have more than one company supplying gas or electricity, you definitely need to shop around. No matter what you are in the market for, you should always shop around to see what is available to you. In all likelihood, it will not do you much good though when it comes to gas or electricity. These companies tend to stay at around the same price as each other, probably fluctuating back and forth, who has the lower price and who has the higher at any given time. These companies stay competitive with each other, neither under cutting the other, because if one was to have significantly lower prices, the other would need to drop their prices just to stay in business.

The energy companies have the advantage. They have the supply and the demand for it is unrelenting. These companies can charge anything they want, and people will continue to pay the skyrocketing prices, because they are left without a choice. We as a society need energy. Our society has developed to the point that we would be at a loss without electricity. Electricity is used for everything today, so there is, unfortunately, no end to the demand for what these companies are supplying. We can try our best to reduce and save our energy consumption, but we cannot totally eliminate it. Until the day we find a way to drastically reduce the demand for energy, we are at the will of these energy supplier companies.
