Are You Benefiting From Deregulated Electricity and Gas at Home?

Saturday, August 11, 20120 comments

As most of us are already aware, customers in regulated electricity and gas markets have no choice as to who provides the electricity and gas for their home and businesses. In a regulated market there is no incentive to offer cost cutting solutions or innovative products and services. That is now changing because people in several states now have a right to choose who they buy their electricity and gas supply from.

Here are the facts:
Deregulated gas and electricity supply opens the origination portion of your bill to the competition. This then, turns the generated power into a market-based product, with the price only dictated by supply and demand.

In a deregulated market local utility companies are demoted to just gas and electricity delivery companies. What does this mean for you? It means that although you will continue to rely on your local utility to deliver your electricity and gas, they will provide the same services like reading your meter and, in some cases, bill you. This makes it possible for you to choose an alternate source for the origination portion of your bill, which is usually about two-thirds of the total cost.

Every customer Should be afforded the same opportunity to participate in a competitive deregulated gas and electricity market and enjoy the benefits that only competitive retail markets can deliver.

To date there are about 20 states that are in various modes of deregulation of their energy markets. It takes time for a state to achieve true deregulation where rates are at market-rate pricing. Deregulated gas and electricity is a growing opportunity as it expands across the nation.

Water Heaters:
One consumer energy organization studied and found that, like most appliances, water heaters have improved greatly over the years. They say that today's models are much more energy efficient and that the average life expectancy of a water heater is about 13yrs. So if a customer chooses one that saves money, the savings will continue for years to come.

Some might ask, "Which is better, electric or gas?" Past studies have shown that in most every state natural gas is the most economical way to go; that it usually costs about times as much to heat the same amount of water with electricity as it does with gas. And although using natural gas may be easier on your wallet, many homes are not equipped with natural gas. In years past if you had an all-electric home it was probably wise to invest in a gas water heater. But with deregulation now moving into neighborhoods across the nation and bringing with it competitive rate pricing, holding off on that new gas water heater just may prove to be worth the wait.

So, here is the bottom line. Deregulation for electricity and gas is here. It has been a long wait, but the days of having your say when it comes to where your electricity and gas supply comes from have arrived. Many regulated customers are anxiously awaiting deregulation to hit their town and to finally be given the freedom to compare rates and make a decision of choice and not necessity. What choice will you make?
